Community Pillar Judy Beers: A Life of Service, Resilience, and Connection

By Kimber Rudy

Local Wakefield seniors and Wakefield Memorial High School seniors came together for lunch, conversation, and interviews as part of a cross-generational program titled Seniors to Seniors.  The resulting articles written by students using lived experiences from the adults as content are being published as a series.  Seniors to Seniors is a collaboration between The Savings Bank, The Room to Write, Wakefield High School, Wakefield Senior Center, Wakefield Daily Item, and JC Marketing Associates.

Born on December 16th, 1941, Judy’s early years were marked by a strong sense of independence and curiosity. Judy grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts and graduated from Somerville High School in 1959. After getting married in 1963, she settled in Wakefield and embarked on a career path with various roles. She worked as a paralegal, substitute teacher, and has administrative duties at a local church. Her career trajectory reflects her adaptability, intellect, and willingness to embrace new challenges. Judy’s impact extends beyond her professional endeavors. She’s been involved in various community organizations such as being the President of the Wakefield Music Boosters for two years as well as volunteering at a local library.

Retirement brought new opportunities for Judy to pursue her passions and give back to her community. Her love of birding has led her to destinations such as Cuba, Costa Rica, and 47 of the 50 United States, immersing herself in the wonders of nature and birdwatching. Her love of the outdoors extends to activities like Tai Chi and volunteering at her church where she actively participates in outreach programs, filling her life with unforgettable experiences and a deeper appreciation for the world’s wonders.

Family is always at the forefront of Judy’s life. Married her husband Tom Beers for over six decades. Judy is also a devoted mother to her children: Daniel and Johanna Beers. Her expanded family includes grandchildren and even a great-granddaughter, bringing Judy immense joy and fulfillment.

One of the multiple challenges Judy faced was breast cancer. Her first bout of breast cancer was in 1995 and she had radiation and chemotherapy. The second bout of cancer was in 2005, in which she had surgery to remove it, and she is currently cancer-free! “I am very fortunate and encourage people to get mammograms as I wouldn’t be here without that detection,” stated Judy Beers.
